Tech Mahindra on February 20 announced the launch of a new education-focused large language model (LLM) at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, marking a significant step toward building AI solutions tailored to India’s linguistic diversity and learning needs.

Developed under the IndiaAI Mission, the Hindi-first model is an advanced version of the company’s earlier 1.2-billion-parameter foundational LLM and has now been scaled to an 8-billion-parameter architecture. Built as part of Project Indus, the upgraded model is designed specifically for education use cases, aiming to democratise access to high-quality learning in Hindi and other Indian languages.

The LLM supports agentic AI capabilities, enabling developers to build autonomous AI agents that can interact fluently in Hindi while helping learners gain deeper conceptual understanding in subjects such as physics and other disciplines. The initiative seeks to create more inclusive, culturally relevant digital learning tools aligned with India’s multilingual environment.

To power the model, Tech Mahindra leveraged NVIDIA’s AI stack, including the NeMo framework and NIM microservices, ensuring production-grade scalability and performance. The company also generated nearly half a billion synthetic tokens using NVIDIA’s data tools to address data scarcity in several Indian languages.

According to company officials, global foundational AI models are often not optimised for countries with deep linguistic and cultural diversity like India. The new model aims to bridge that gap by delivering scalable, locally relevant AI-powered learning and citizen-centric services.

This launch is the fifth sovereign foundation model introduced in recent days under the IndiaAI Mission, following earlier releases by Sarvam, Gnani.ai, BharatGen and Fractal Analytics—signalling a broader push toward building indigenous AI capabilities for sectors such as education, healthcare, governance and enterprise.
