Tamil Nadu Set to Host Hyundai’s New Hydrogen Research Hub at IIT Madras By Elets News Network - 23 August 2024

Hyundai Motor India is investing ₹180 crore to establish a Hydrogen Innovation Centre at IIT Madras’ Thaiyur campus. The facility will cover 65,000 sq ft and will focus on hydrogen technology research. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recently laid the foundation stone during the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave in Chennai.

This collaboration between Hyundai Motor India, IIT Madras, and the Tamil Nadu government’s investment agency, Guidance Tamil Nadu, aims to develop hydrogen technology in India. It aligns with Hyundai’s goal to make Tamil Nadu a hub for automotive innovation, particularly in alternative fuels.


IIT Madras Director Professor V Kamakoti said, “IIT Madras has continued to be the forerunner in India’s transformation into a technology and innovation superpower. Furthering this journey, the institute is honoured to partner with Hyundai Motor India Ltd and Guidance Tamil Nadu to develop a dedicated research facility that will create breakthrough innovations in the field of hydrogen mobility.”

The centre will support startups and researchers, contributing to developing a strong hydrogen ecosystem.

Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Hyundai’s Chief Manufacturing Officer, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting Tamil Nadu’s sustainable fuel initiatives. The centre will focus on green hydrogen generation and fuel cell development. It is expected to be operational by 2026.
