OpenClaw, an open-source project that gained a strong developer following after its launch in November, is known for its ability to perform tasks autonomously. Users have employed it to manage emails, make reservations, check in for flights, and connect with messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Slack to issue commands.
Steinberger said joining OpenAI would allow him to work at the frontier of AI research while continuing to build tools designed for everyday use. He noted that his goal is to create AI systems simple enough for anyone to use, while ensuring safety, thoughtful design, and access to advanced models and infrastructure.
OpenAI indicated that OpenClaw will continue as an open-source initiative supported through a foundation structure. The company emphasised that it sees open ecosystems as important to the future of AI, particularly as multi-agent technologies develop.

The move comes amid broader discussions in the tech community about the risks and safeguards associated with autonomous AI agents, especially those that interact with personal data and external systems. Steinberger said future development will prioritise responsible deployment alongside innovation.
With Steinberger’s addition, OpenAI is expected to expand its work on practical AI assistants capable of coordinating complex digital tasks, an area gaining rapid attention across the industry.
