The race for AI dominance continues to intensify, with OpenAI’s latest model, ChatGPT-4o, now overtaking Google Gemini to claim the top position on the LMSys Chatbot Arena leaderboard.
Released on August 8, 2024, the new ChatGPT-4o quickly earned 1314 points, outscoring Google’s Gemini-1.5-Pro-Exp by 17 points. This victory comes just after Google boasted about its leadership during the “Made by Google” event, highlighting how quickly the AI landscape can shift.

ChatGPT-4o’s success comes from its improvements, particularly in technical areas like coding, following instructions, and managing complex prompts. According to LMSys.org on X, the new model outperformed its predecessor by over 30 points in coding capabilities. One of its standout achievements was building a full iOS app in just one hour.

While Google’s Gemini-1.5-Pro-Exp has fallen behind, the competition remains fierce. Upcoming releases, including Google Ultra 1.5, Claude Opus 1.5, and xAI’s Grok 2, are expected to further shake up the rankings, maintaining the unpredictable race for AI supremacy.
