GPT-4, OpenAI’s most recent text-generation model, has been made generally accessible via their API. Access to GPT-4 is now available to current OpenAI API developers with a solid payment history.
By the end of this month, the company intends to grant access to new developers, gradually raising the availability limits based on compute availability.

Millions of developers have requested access to the GPT-4 API, according to a blog post by OpenAI, which claims that there has been an increase in demand since March. With the rapid expansion of innovative products utilising GPT-4, OpenAI sees a time when chat-based models can support a variety of use cases.

In comparison to GPT-3.5, GPT-4 offers noticeable improvements. It can accept image and text inputs and generate text, including code. On a number of academic and professional benchmarks, it has performed at “human-level” levels. The blog post stated that GPT-4 was trained using publicly accessible data from websites and licensed data, just like earlier GPT models.
The image-understanding feature is currently not available to all OpenAI clients, which is an important distinction to make. The only partner currently testing this feature is Be My Eyes, but OpenAI hasn’t said when it will be available to more people.
Along with GPT-4, OpenAI has also made the DALL.E, Whisper, and GPT-3.5 Turbo APIs generally available. Additionally, OpenAI is working diligently to enable fine-tuning for both GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 Turbo, enabling programmers to alter and train models for particular tasks. This year’s latter half should see the release of this eagerly awaited feature.

Within the next six months, the Microsoft-backed company also intends to retire a few of its earlier models that made use of the Completions API. As they prioritize future model and product upgrades for the Chat Completions API, OpenAI has no plans to publicly release new models that use the Completions API. Older completion models won’t be accessible after January 4, 2024, as a result.
