Meta is overhauling its AI structure to accelerate the rollout of cutting-edge products and stay ahead in the global AI race. In an internal memo accessed by Axios, Chief Product Officer Chris Cox revealed the creation of two specialized units: the AI Products team and the AGI Foundations team.

The AI Products division, led by Connor Hayes, will oversee Meta’s consumer-facing AI tools, including its Meta AI assistant, AI Studio, and generative features across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. On the other hand, the AGI Foundations group—co-led by Ahmad Al-Dahle and Amir Frenkel—will focus on developing core technologies such as Meta’s Llama models and innovations in reasoning, voice, and multimedia.

While Meta’s research arm FAIR remains independent, one multimedia unit from FAIR will integrate into the AGI Foundations team. No layoffs are expected, though leadership changes are in motion.

The restructuring aims to foster nimble, accountable teams with clearer roles and minimal overlapping responsibilities. Cox noted that the new setup is designed to boost ownership and eliminate hidden dependencies.

This latest reorganization follows previous shifts in 2023 and comes as Meta faces intensifying competition from AI leaders like OpenAI, Google, and ByteDance, alongside challenges in retaining top talent.
