Google to replace SMS-based two-factor authentication with QR code authentication By Elets News Network - 26 February 2025

two-factor authentication

Google is preparing to phase out SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA) for Gmail users, shifting towards QR code verification, according to a Forbes report. This move aims to strengthen security and reduce vulnerabilities linked to phishing attacks and SIM-swapping fraud, where cybercriminals hijack users’ phone numbers to intercept authentication codes.

Why the change?

Since 2011, Gmail users have relied on SMS-based authentication, receiving a six-digit code after entering their password. However, this method has become increasingly susceptible to cyber threats. Attackers frequently exploit weaknesses in mobile networks to steal verification codes, either through SIM-swapping or phishing scams, making SMS-based authentication a less reliable security layer.

To counter these risks, Google is introducing QR code-based verification, requiring users to scan a code with their smartphone camera to confirm their identity.

What are the alternatives?

Google already provides several secure login options that users can adopt:

  • Google Prompts – A pop-up notification on a registered device asking users to approve or deny a login attempt.
  • Authenticator Apps – Time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) generated by apps like Google Authenticator or Authy.
  • Security Keys – Physical authentication devices such as YubiKey, offering the highest level of protection.

Google is not the first company to step away from SMS-based verification. X (formerly Twitter) previously removed SMS authentication due to security concerns, including fraudsters exploiting telecom loopholes for financial gain.

What’s next?

Although Google has yet to confirm an official rollout date, the transition to QR code authentication is expected in the coming months. It remains unclear whether Google will also phase out phone call-based authentication, another alternative to SMS-based 2FA.
