At Google I/O 2025, Google launched its next big leap in spatial computing — Android XR, a new platform powering a wave of smart headsets and glasses enhanced by Gemini AI. Designed for immersive, hands-free assistance, Android XR is built for devices that blend the physical and digital worlds seamlessly.
The company showcased Android XR glasses that integrate cameras, microphones, speakers, and an optional in-lens display. When paired with Gemini, the glasses can understand the user’s surroundings, respond to voice commands, and provide real-time contextual assistance. Use cases demonstrated include messaging, navigation, making appointments, taking photos, and live language translation — effectively providing “subtitles for the real world.”

Android XR is part of a broader collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm, first announced with Samsung’s upcoming XR headset, Project Moohan, arriving later this year. Now, Google is extending this partnership to smart glasses — co-developing a reference hardware and software platform to support a wider ecosystem of wearable devices.
To make the glasses stylish and wearable all day, Google is partnering with fashion-forward eyewear brands such as Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. Future collaborations with brands like Kering Eyewear are also planned to expand design options.
Developers will gain access to the Android XR platform later this year, enabling the creation of next-gen apps for this evolving wearable ecosystem.
