OpenAI has appointed Fidji Simo, the current CEO of Instacart, as its first CEO of Applications. Fidji shared her excitement about the new role on social media, expressing gratitude to CEO Sam Altman and emphasising her deep belief in AI’s potential, especially in areas like disease treatment.
Fidji, who has served on OpenAI’s board for the past year, will now report directly to Altman. This move allows Altman to concentrate more on core priorities such as research, infrastructure, and AI safety, which he described as critical to achieving OpenAI’s long-term goals around artificial general intelligence.
In tandem with this leadership change, OpenAI is also restructuring its business model. The company is transitioning its for-profit division into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), a step it says better reflects its mission and evolving role in the AI ecosystem. Originally formed as a nonprofit, OpenAI introduced a for-profit arm in 2019 to attract investment while maintaining governance oversight. That arm will now operate under the PBC model.

On the global stage, OpenAI has launched a new initiative called OpenAI for Countries. The program aims to help national governments develop AI infrastructure that aligns with democratic values. It forms part of OpenAI’s larger Stargate project, a joint effort with Oracle and SoftBank that was unveiled in January alongside former President Donald Trump.
