Akasa Air, a newcomer in India’s aviation industry, on January 18 finalised a significant deal to acquire 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, a mix of the 737 MAX 10 and 737 MAX 8-200 models. This move represents a strategic push into domestic and international markets.
This agreement is noteworthy as it is the first major order for Boeing’s MAX series since a recent incident involving a mid-air cabin panel failure. However, the specifics about whether the deal includes the MAX 9 variant, which faced global groundings after the Alaska Airlines incident, remain unclear.

The announcement, made at the Wings 2024 airshow in Hyderabad, propels Akasa Air into a historic position. It’s the first Indian carrier to accumulate over 200 aircraft orders within just 17 months of operation, highlighting its strong financial base and Boeing’s confidence in its future prospects.

Vinay Dube, Akasa Air’s Founder and CEO, expressed at the airshow that this significant order positions the airline to become a top global player by the decade’s end. He highlighted the potential of the Indian aviation market and Akasa Air’s role in it.
Dube also noted the strategic importance of the new fleet in expanding operations and venturing into international routes soon.
Akasa Air began its fleet development in 2021 with 72 Boeing 737 MAX planes, adding 4 more in June 2023. With the latest deal, its total order reaches 226 aircraft. The airline, currently operating 22 planes, plans to receive 204 more over the next eight years.
The 737 MAX series, known for its fuel efficiency, offers a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to older models. Additionally, it boasts a 50% lower noise footprint, aligning with Akasa Air’s sustainability commitment. The series also promises cost-effectiveness with the lowest seat-mile cost for single-aisle jets, coupled with high reliability and an improved passenger experience.
