Akamai Technologies has unveiled Akamai Cloud Accelerated Compute Instances, a groundbreaking cloud-based computing solution powered by NETINT’s advanced Video Processing Units (VPUs). This launch establishes Akamai as the first cloud provider to integrate VPUs, revolutionizing media transcoding efficiency in cloud environments.
Traditionally confined to on-premises deployments or colocation facilities, NETINT’s VPUs are now available through Akamai’s cloud infrastructure. This enables media companies to leverage high-performance video encoding technology without substantial infrastructure investments.

Akamai’s new accelerated instances are built on Quadra T1U VPUs, capable of supporting ultra-high-definition resolutions up to 8K at 60fps in formats such as AV1, HEVC, and H.264. These VPUs can efficiently handle up to 32 simultaneous 1080p30 live streams, making them an ideal solution for both live streaming and video-on-demand services.

With the demand for high-quality, low-latency video streaming surging, VPUs provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional software-based encoding solutions. By offloading compute-heavy video processing tasks from CPUs, these units deliver up to 20 times higher throughput, freeing up resources for critical applications like real-time speech-to-text captioning, de-interlacing, and dynamic packaging.
“Bringing traditionally hardware-constrained power to the cloud removes long-standing barriers for businesses. With this innovation, companies can cut costs, scale seamlessly, and improve streaming quality, solving an industry-wide challenge,” said Jon Alexander, VP of Product Management at Akamai.

Akamai aims to differentiate itself from hyperscalers by positioning its cloud platform as the preferred choice for media companies. Its services, already trusted by the world’s top 10 video streaming platforms, span crucial areas like contribution, transport, transcoding, digital rights management (DRM), ad insertion, and content security.
“VPUs are a game-changer for video streaming profitability,” said Randal Horne, Chief Revenue Officer at NETINT. “The cost of delivering large-scale video content with traditional encoders is overwhelming. NETINT’s VPUs, now integrated with Akamai’s cloud, provide up to 20x the efficiency at a fraction of the cost compared to conventional industry solutions.”
Akamai’s cloud platform is designed with flexibility and openness, allowing customers to customize workflows, integrate third-party solutions, and enjoy low egress costs while leveraging NVIDIA GPU-powered transcoding. This latest innovation underscores Akamai’s commitment to empowering the media industry with cutting-edge, scalable cloud solutions.
