Airtel Xstream

A recent study by Opensignal, reveals that Airtel Xstream broadband service is now ahead of Reliance JioFiber in terms of national broadband download speeds in India. The data indicates a substantial lead for Airtel with an average download speed of 44.1Mbps, outpacing JioFiber’s 33.8Mbps by a margin of 10.3Mbps or 30.4%.

This analysis, which reflects the typical speeds users experience in daily usage, marks a continued trend from last year’s July report, where Airtel recorded an average speed of 42.7Mbps. Similarly, in the Broadband Peak Download Speed category, Airtel maintains its lead with a recorded speed of 213.6Mbps compared to Jio’s 155.3Mbps. This metric gauges the experience of users with the highest broadband speeds available.

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), India’s wired broadband subscriber base as of October 2023 stands at 37.35 million, showing a modest monthly growth rate. In the market share landscape, Reliance Jio (34.08%), Bharti Airtel (25.77%), and BSNL (19.82%) hold the largest shares.

Pricing-wise, Airtel Xstream’s plans start at ₹499 for 40Mbps speeds, whereas JioFiber offers a 30Mbps plan at ₹399 per month. Both ISPs provide a range of speed options, including a 1Gbps plan. Notably, both Airtel and Jio claim to offer symmetric download and upload speeds in their fiber broadband networks.

In the Broadband Upload Speed metric, Airtel also leads with an average of 33.3Mbps, surpassing Jio’s 26.8Mbps. This performance is crucial for cloud storage services and file sharing applications. However, JioFiber shows a stronger performance in the Broadband Consistent Quality metric nationally, scoring 71.6% against Airtel’s 68.4%.

The Opensignal report also highlights the significant role of regional ISPs in India. In cities like Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, local ISPs like GTPL, Hathway, ACT, Excitel, Alliance, Wish Net, and GTPL KCBPL are delivering competitive services, sometimes outperforming the national players in download and upload speeds.
