Cashfree Payments, the Bengaluru-based Reserve Bank of India-licensed payment aggregator, made Cashfree Checkout for Agents live with WebMCP on 6 November 2026 so AI shopping agents can read checkout details and drive the payment flow while shoppers approve and authenticate. The company says it is the first Indian payments firm to bring WebMCP to checkout, with support on by default for redirect Hosted Checkout, payment forms and links, and no merchant re-integration.
The launch lands as agentic commerce moves into production rails, alongside the Visa Agentic Commerce Benchmark on AI agent pass rates, and it echoes control questions raised when TCS found only about 10% of firms let AI agents act alone.
What Cashfree Checkout for Agents exposes
WebMCP is an emerging web standard that lets a page publish named tools an in-browser AI agent can call instead of scraping screens and simulating clicks. On Cashfree Hosted Checkout in redirect mode, agents get tools including get_checkout_summary, list_payment_methods, open_payment_method, back_to_payment_methods, show_upi_qr and get_payment_status.
In a typical UPI QR path the agent reads the order, lists methods, optionally confirms with the shopper, shows the QR, then checks status while the user scans and enters the UPI PIN. Agents cannot alter the order. Tools never accept card numbers, CVV or OTPs, and the UPI PIN stays with the shopper. Cashfree estimates a 40%+ cut in tokens and checkout time versus agents that otherwise use about 2 million tokens per checkout.
Who can use it and what stays human
Live transaction processing began on 6 November 2026 for redirect Hosted Checkout; popup and inline modes are not supported yet. Agents need a Chromium-based browser with WebMCP, such as Chrome 149 or later. Reeju Datta, Cashfree co-founder, has said humans stay in the loop for final review and authentication as the first stage of the company’s agentic payments roadmap, and that WebMCP is set so the agent can only read order details, not change them.
Cashfree has said agent traffic is still under 1% of sessions. Merchants on redirect Hosted Checkout need no code change; agent-assisted payments reconcile like any other order via the Get Order API or webhooks. That matters for CIOs building agent stacks with partners such as the Vi Intelligence Lab with PwC India for agentic AI, and for teams watching Aina Ring preorders for AI agent control.
Why it matters for CIOs and fintech builders
Payment pages are where many browser agents stall, because checkout is often hosted by the payment provider. A shared tool surface across Cashfree merchants gives agents one pattern for many stores while keeping RBI-licensed rails, fraud checks and shopper approval intact. Security context remains sharp after CERT-In flagged the Crafty Falcon AI hacking campaign targeting fintechs, so human-in-the-loop authentication and hard tool limits matter as much as speed.
