HCLTech has launched AI-Powered Operations, a new offering that places specialised AI agents and conversational assistants directly inside enterprise mainframe environments. The company announced the service from New York and Noida on 2 November 2026, pitching it at banks, insurers, airlines and other organisations that still run their most critical workloads on mainframes.
The launch shows agentic AI moving beyond chatbots and coding tools into the oldest and most risk-sensitive layer of enterprise IT, a shift Indian IT services firms are racing to monetise as clients ask how AI will reshape IT services work.
What HCLTech’s AI-Powered Operations does
According to HCLTech, the offering combines two kinds of AI helpers that work under human oversight:
- Mainframe skill agents that handle specialised tasks across system administration, observability and performance optimisation.
- Conversational AI assistants that let operations teams query systems and run workflows in plain language.
The aim is to move mainframe teams from reacting to incidents to spotting and fixing problems earlier, while keeping the security, resilience and governance controls these platforms are known for. The service is backed by HCLTech’s dedicated Mainframe Center of Excellence.
Why mainframes need AI now
Mainframes still process a large share of the world’s banking transactions, payments and reservations, but the engineers who know them well are getting harder to find. That skills gap, plus pressure to cut run costs, is pushing enterprises to look for automation that does not put stability at risk.
“Enterprises running mission-critical workloads on mainframes are under increasing pressure to modernize operations and drive greater efficiency, without compromising reliability or control,” said Rampal Singh, Senior Vice President and Global Business Head of Hybrid Cloud at HCLTech. He said the offering is meant to help clients “simplify operations, reduce risk and unlock greater value from their mainframe investments.”
Raghu Kidambi, Corporate Vice President and Head of AI Ecosystems at HCLTech, said AI is “fundamentally changing how enterprises manage and extract value from their most strategic technology platforms,” and that the company is “embedding intelligent agents and operational intelligence directly into mainframe environments.”
What it means for CIOs
For technology leaders in BFSI and other regulated sectors, the pitch is attractive but needs guardrails. India’s cyber security agency recently flagged AI agents accessing Indian firms’ systems undetected, a reminder that any agent touching a system of record needs its own identity, tight permissions, full audit logs and clear human sign-off for high-impact changes.
HCLTech’s emphasis on human oversight points in that direction. CIOs evaluating such services should ask which actions agents can take on their own, how changes are logged and rolled back, and how the offering fits with existing AI agent governance controls.
Key facts at a glance
- Who: HCLTech, which has more than 230,000 employees in 60+ countries and reported $14.8 billion in revenue for the 12 months to September 2026.

As enterprises push AI deeper into core systems, how agents are governed will matter as much as what they can do, a theme central to the conversations at the World AI Summit.
