Microsoft and BlackRock have collaborated to raise a $30 billion fund, named the Global AI Infrastructure Investment Partnership, to develop artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This infrastructure will include support for building data centres and energy projects needed to power AI technologies.

AI models, especially the ones used for deep learning and large-scale data processing, require immense computing power, which increases energy consumption. As a result, companies are building specialised data centres with thousands of interconnected chips.

The investment fund will be tasked with improving AI supply chains and energy resources. MGX, an investment firm backed by Abu Dhabi, will serve as a general partner, and Nvidia, a leader in AI chip technology, will contribute its expertise.

When including debt financing, the initiative could raise up to $100 billion. The primary investments will be in the U.S., with additional projects in partner countries.
