
Startups and Global Capability Centres (GCCs) have contributed immensely to job creation in India, generating approximately eight crore new jobs in the past five years, according to Sumita Dawra, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Dawra referenced this data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) while speaking at an event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Employers’ Federation of India (EFI) in New Delhi.

She discussed several key reforms implemented by the ministry, including the decriminalisation of labour laws and initiatives to boost female workforce participation, to enhance the ease of doing business. Dawra stated that social security and labour welfare reforms are crucial for driving inclusive growth in India.

Dawra also noted the codification of 29 labour laws into four, along with the activation of a national career service portal, and the integration of data from the Skills Ministry. She additionally mentioned that India currently has approximately one crore gig workers, with the gig economy projected to employ around 2.4 crore people by 2030.
The government has established a task force to study the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the future of work, underscoring the need for further research in this area.
