gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b push the frontier of open-weight reasoning models By cioNetworks - 06 August 2025

“GPT” stands for “Generative Pre-training Transformer”, which is a type of language processing Artificial Intelligence designed by OpenAI. “OSS” stands for “Open Source Software”, designating these particular models as openly accessible and available for public use.

“gpt-oss-120b” and “gpt-oss-20b” represent two different versions of these AI models. The numbers refer to the number of parameters that the AI model has – 120 billion and 20 billion respectively. A model with more parameters typically can represent more complex functions and therefore might be stronger at making predictions or generalizing from data.

These two models expand the boundaries by offering advanced capabilities in semantic reasoning and text generation tasks, providing high-quality outputs ranging from drafting emails to writing code. As they are from the OpenAI’s GPT-3 family, these models can understand and create human-like text based on the input or prompts given to them. The models are also capable of multi-modal tasks, understanding and generating responses from both text and image inputs. They are intended to stimulate further AI research and assist in various applications that need a higher level of language processing.
