WhatsApp Web is working on a reverse image search feature to help users identify fake photos and tackle misinformation. According to WABetaInfo, this new feature will allow users to upload images directly to Google for verification, all from within the app. While currently in beta testing on Android, the feature is set to roll out on WhatsApp Web soon.
The reverse image search tool lets users upload an image to Google, where they can check its authenticity. This can help users identify altered or misrepresented images, providing context and supporting informed decision-making about the content they receive.

To use the feature, users can access it via the overflow menu by tapping the three-dot button in the image viewing interface. Google will handle the image search process, and WhatsApp will not have access to the content of the image.

A report highlights that WhatsApp’s goal with this feature is to help users assess the credibility of content shared on the platform. It aims to make the process of detecting manipulated or misleading media simpler and more reliable without requiring users to leave the app.
As misinformation and altered images become more common, this feature offers a practical way for users to check the authenticity of shared content and stay informed.
