Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared a comprehensive reflection on the company’s journey as it begins its transition into a new phase of artificial intelligence development. Marking the second anniversary of ChatGPT’s launch and nine years since OpenAI’s inception, Altman wrote about the achievements, challenges, and the company’s vision for AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).
A Decade-Long Journey Toward AGI
Founded nearly nine years ago, OpenAI’s goal has been to develop AGI—a technology that Altman described as potentially the most impactful in human history. Early on, the initiative faced scepticism, with few believing in its feasibility. However, OpenAI’s consistent focus on building models that are both advanced and beneficial has gradually proven the naysayers wrong.

Altman noted that the development of AGI has required navigating uncharted territory. “There is still so much to understand, still so much we don’t know, and it’s still so early. But we know a lot more than we did when we started,” he wrote.

The Launch of ChatGPT
The release of ChatGPT on 30 November 2022 marked a turning point. Initially conceptualised as an experimental feature to showcase conversational capabilities, ChatGPT rapidly gained traction, triggering an unprecedented wave of growth in OpenAI and the broader AI industry. By 2024, the platform had grown from 100 million weekly active users to over 300 million.
Altman acknowledged that this growth came with challenges. Building an organisation around such a transformative technology required rapid adaptation, with no existing roadmap for guidance. The pace of innovation, coupled with the stress of maintaining alignment with safety and ethical standards, has tested the resilience of the company and its leadership.
Navigating Governance and Leadership Challenges
In November 2023, OpenAI faced a leadership crisis when Altman was unexpectedly dismissed by the board of directors. The incident, which unfolded without prior warning, highlighted deficiencies in governance, as Altman described it as “a big failure of governance by well-meaning people.” He credited the event with shaping his approach to leadership and fostering the creation of a more robust governance framework within OpenAI.
Altman expressed gratitude to his colleagues, industry partners, and individuals who supported him during the crisis. He singled out tech leaders Ron Conway and Brian Chesky for their extraordinary efforts in stabilising the organisation during that period.

Future Directions: From AGI to Superintelligence
As OpenAI continues to refine its AI models, Altman outlined plans for the integration of AI agents into the workforce in 2025. These agents are expected to enhance productivity across industries. Looking further ahead, the company is now setting its sights on superintelligence—AI systems that exceed human intelligence in all domains. Altman envisions such advancements accelerating scientific discovery and contributing to greater prosperity worldwide.
Despite the challenges and uncertainties associated with this endeavour, Altman reaffirmed OpenAI’s commitment to its mission: “We continue to believe that the best way to make an AI system safe is by iteratively and gradually releasing it into the world, giving society time to adapt and co-evolve with the technology, learning from experience, and continuing to make the technology safer.”
Altman concluded his reflection by recognising the contributions of OpenAI’s team, partners, and supporters. He attributed the organisation’s achievements to collective efforts and expressed optimism about the path ahead, stating, “AI development has taken many twists and turns, and we expect more in the future.”
