Qualcomm reveals the future with Gen AI By Elets News Network - 26 October 2023

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was unveiled by chipmaker Qualcomm in an effort to progress Android phone generative AI on-device. This chip has a special CPU core arrangement and was produced using a 4 nm technology.

Five Performance cores operating at 3.2 GHz and two Efficiency cores operating at 2.3 GHz support the main ARM Cortex X4 processor, which operates at 3.3 GHz. This setup increases power efficiency by 20% while simultaneously providing a 30% speed improvement. Gamers will be pleased with the 1.5-fold increase in ray tracing capabilities and the 25% boost in performance and efficiency.

Neural networks on Qualcomm Snapdragon processors are already intended to be operated via the Qualcomm Hexagon Neural Processing Unit. This component offers a notable 98% speed boost and 40% efficiency gain over its predecessor. The Hexagon NPU, together with the Kryo CPU and Adreno GPU, makes up Qualcomm’s AI Engine, which the company stated is focused on generative AI applications for on-device use. The chip’s capacity to execute huge language models locally is an intriguing characteristic that highlights its adaptability in handling various AI applications.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s multimedia capabilities are equally amazing. As the first AI Engine from Qualcomm to use multi-modal generative AI models, it supports big language models as well as language vision models. Additionally, the processor offers new camera features like AI-powered Night Vision video and Video Object Eraser. Semantic segmentation may be applied concurrently on both front and rear cameras, supports up to 12 layers, and improves the appearance of faces, hair, clothing, and the sky. The chip also includes Dolby HDR photo capture, which offers more than 1 billion color variations—a substantial boost over the 16.7 million achievable with JPEG.

Software developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are in charge of putting these functionalities into practice. With the impending release of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphones by companies like Asus, Honor, and Xiaomi, consumers will have the chance to fully utilize this technical innovation.

With the goal of enabling seamless experiences between Android, Windows, and other Snapdragon devices, Qualcomm unveiled “Snapdragon Seamless” as a cross-platform solution along with the release of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Devices may now easily find and communicate information with one another thanks to this technology, which may promote device integration. Examples include the ability to drag and drop files and windows between different devices, as well as the smooth operation of mouse and keyboards on PCs, phones, and tablets.
