OpenAI’s ChatGPT Booms to 400M Users, GPT-5 & New AI Updates Incoming By Elets News Network - 21 February 2025

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has reached a new milestone, surpassing 400 million weekly active users (WAU), with over 2 million businesses utilising the tool for work. The announcement came from OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap, who shared the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“We feel very fortunate to serve 5% of the world every week,” Lightcap stated, highlighting the significant growth in ChatGPT’s user base. He also noted a fivefold surge in API usage for reasoning models since the introduction of OpenAI’s o3 mini model.

OpenAI is gearing up to launch GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, which will be integrated into ChatGPT and the API. Notably, GPT-5 will be freely available to all users, while ChatGPT Plus subscribers will have access to an even more advanced version with enhanced intelligence.

“GPT-5 will unify our GPT and o-series models into a single powerful system—we believe even casual users will find it impressive,” Lightcap said. OpenAI is also planning to expand ChatGPT’s agent capabilities later this year, alongside other upcoming updates.

Despite OpenAI’s rapid growth, it faces increasing competition from other AI companies. DeepSeek, a Chinese AI firm, disrupted the market in January, raising concerns about the impact on U.S.-based AI firms. Meanwhile, xAI’s Grok-3 has surged to the No. 1 spot on the App Store, surpassing ChatGPT and DeepSeek. Independent benchmarks indicate that Grok-3 outperformed leading models, including Google Gemini 2 Pro, DeepSeek V3, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and GPT-4 in reasoning tests like AIME, GPQA, and LCB.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, is exploring the possibility of open-sourcing its next AI model. He recently conducted a poll on X, asking users whether they would prefer a compact, phone-sized model or an o3-mini-level model, which, while small, still requires GPU support.

Meanwhile, Anthropic is preparing to introduce a hybrid reasoning model designed to optimize computational resources—allocating more power to complex queries while efficiently managing simpler tasks.

With AI development accelerating and competition heating up, the next wave of AI innovation is set to redefine the industry.
