OpenAI shifts to OpenAI model amid rising competition By Elets News Network - 01 April 2025

OpenAI model

In a significant move, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, revealed that it is developing a more open generative AI model. This announcement comes in response to increasing competition in the open-source AI space from players like the Chinese company DeepSeek and Meta.

This shift represents a notable change for OpenAI, which has historically been a staunch advocate of proprietary, closed AI models. Until now, the company has restricted developers from modifying its core technology, citing concerns over security and ethical implications. OpenAI and other companies championing closed models, such as Google, have often argued that open models are more prone to misuse and manipulation by malicious actors, including adversarial foreign entities.

The decision to move toward a more open model is also tied to ongoing tensions with Elon Musk, a former investor in OpenAI. Musk has criticized the company for straying from its open-source, safety-oriented roots and urged it to refocus on being a force for good in AI development.

The growing demand for open AI models is fueled by large organizations and governments that are hesitant to rely on proprietary models for their AI applications, particularly when it comes to sensitive data. Meta’s Llama models and DeepSeek’s AI systems have become popular alternatives, offering companies the ability to download, modify, and retain control over their models and data. Meta’s Llama family, for example, recently surpassed one billion downloads, a milestone that highlights the increasing appeal of open-source AI.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged the importance of this transition, stating that while the company had considered this move for a long time, other priorities had initially taken precedence. However, with the rising pressure from the market, OpenAI believes it’s the right time to take action. Altman further shared that the company would engage with developers through a series of events to collect feedback as it builds the new model. These events will be held across San Francisco, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region in the coming weeks.

The announcement comes on the heels of OpenAI’s continued success, driven by its latest image-generation features integrated into ChatGPT. Altman recently tweeted that the new tool had gained an impressive one million users within the first hour of launch, causing high demand that reportedly overwhelmed the company’s graphics processing units (GPUs).

As OpenAI navigates this strategic pivot, it is also finalizing a monumental $40 billion funding round, led by Japan’s SoftBank Group. This deal, if completed, would mark the largest capital-raising round ever for a startup, further solidifying OpenAI’s position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
