OpenAI reinvents ChatGPT as AI Super Assistant By Kaanchi Chawla - 03 June 2025

ChatGPT, once known merely as an AI chatbot, is quickly transforming into a multi-functional digital assistant. OpenAI’s flagship product now supports advanced capabilities like image generation, AI search, online shopping (currently in its early phase), and deep research queries. But the company is setting its sights much higher, with plans to roll out a powerful “super assistant” as early as June 2025.

Leaked documents from the ongoing Google antitrust trial in the U.S., reportedly from late 2024, reveal OpenAI’s roadmap titled ChatGPT: H1 2025 Strategy. The report outlines the company’s vision of a next-gen assistant that can understand user preferences deeply and act as a seamless interface to the internet.

OpenAI describes this super assistant as “an intelligent entity with T-shaped” skills”—capable of handling both simple tasks like managing to-do lists or booking appointments and more complex ones such as legal research or trip planning. Essentially, the assistant is designed to do anything a smart, emotionally intelligent human with a computer could.

This strategic leap aligns with CEO Sam Altman’s ambitious collaboration with renowned designer Jony Ive. Together, they are reportedly working on custom hardware, possibly a smart home device, to bring the assistant closer to daily life. The documents hint that ChatGPT will soon be everywhere, helping users cook at home, navigate while travelling, manage meetings at work, or even reflect during solitary walks.

Multimodal capabilities and a generative UI will allow ChatGPT to interact across voice, text, and visuals, making it more intuitive and expressive. OpenAI’s newer models, GPT-4.5 and beyond (codenamed o2 and o3), are already considered capable enough to handle these agentic tasks reliably.

The company also acknowledges the challenge posed by tech giants that dominate hardware platforms. To level the playing field, OpenAI plans to work with regulators to secure default assistant status for ChatGPT on various devices.

Despite its grand vision, OpenAI remains cautious about the future. Its internal strategy notes express concern that user growth and revenue might not always align. To support the super assistant’s operations, OpenAI is investing heavily in expanding its data infrastructure through its Stargate project, with billions being poured into new data centers across the U.S. and UAE.
