OpenAI has introduced a new artificial intelligence tool called “Deep Research,” designed to conduct independent research and generate comprehensive reports quickly. This announcement coincided with high-level discussions in Tokyo, where OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and SoftBank Group’s chief Masayoshi Son.
A New AI Agent for In-Depth Analysis
According to OpenAI, Deep Research significantly reduces the time required for complex research tasks, achieving in minutes what could take humans several hours or even days. The tool can search, analyze, and compile information from online sources, offering users detailed insights similar to those provided by research analysts.

During a live demonstration, OpenAI researchers showcased the tool’s ability to process web searches and recommend ski equipment for a Japanese winter holiday. Deep Research can navigate online sources, understand text, images, and PDFs, and recursively refine its searches for more accurate results.

The launch of Deep Research comes at a time of growing competition in the artificial intelligence sector, particularly with China’s DeepSeek chatbot gaining attention for its cost efficiency and performance. DeepSeek’s emergence has spurred increased efforts among American AI developers, including OpenAI, to enhance their technologies.
Meanwhile, OpenAI remains a key participant in the Stargate initiative, a project backed by the U.S. government to invest $500 billion in AI infrastructure. This initiative aims to strengthen AI capabilities across the United States, with SoftBank and Oracle playing significant roles in its development.

Deep Research is built on OpenAI’s latest AI reasoning model, known as OpenAI o3. Unlike traditional chatbots that generate responses based on queries, AI agents like Deep Research can autonomously perform tasks such as compiling reports, organizing data, and assisting in decision-making processes.
In a recent demonstration for policymakers in Washington, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil, demonstrated how the tool could generate a detailed profile of Albert Einstein, including five suggested questions for a hypothetical Senate hearing. The reports generated by Deep Research also include citations, though OpenAI acknowledged that the tool may sometimes misinterpret sources or struggle to differentiate between credible information and speculation.
Despite these limitations, OpenAI believes that Deep Research could drive economic growth by supporting professionals in fields such as finance, science, and law. The company has made the tool available to subscribers of ChatGPT Pro, a premium AI service priced at $200 per month, with plans to expand access through other paid offerings.
As AI continues to evolve, tools like Deep Research highlight the potential of artificial intelligence in transforming research, decision-making, and productivity across multiple industries.
