OpenAI has revealed it is testing new reasoning AI models, named o3 and o3 mini. This move signals increasing competition with companies like Google to develop advanced models capable of solving complex tasks.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, stated that the company plans to release o3 mini by the end of January 2025, followed by the full o3 model. These larger language models aim to outperform current versions and draw in new users and investments.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, introduced its o1 models in September. These were designed to spend more time analysing queries to address challenging problems. According to a blog post, the o1 models excel in tasks involving science, coding, and mathematics, offering improved reasoning capabilities over earlier versions.

The o3 and o3 mini models, which are undergoing internal safety testing, are expected to surpass the performance of the o1 models, OpenAI has confirmed.

OpenAI initiated an AI technology race with the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. The growing popularity of its products and frequent launches contributed to its successful $6.6 billion funding round in October.
Meanwhile, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, introduced the second generation of its Gemini AI model earlier this month, marking its attempt to regain a leading position in AI development.
