NVIDIA has launched the Alpamayo family of open AI models, simulation tools, and datasets designed to accelerate the development of safe, reasoning-based autonomous vehicles. CEO Jensen Huang unveiled the platform at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, describing it as “the ChatGPT moment for physical AI” where machines begin to understand, reason, and act in the real world.
At the heart of the platform is Alpamayo 1, a 10 billion-parameter vision language action model that enables autonomous vehicles to think and reason like humans. The system can solve complex edge cases, such as navigating a traffic light outage at a busy intersection, without previous experience. It breaks down problems into steps, reasons through every possibility, selects the safest path, and explains its driving decisions.

NVIDIA is releasing a comprehensive dataset containing 1,727 hours of driving data collected from 25 countries and over 2,500 cities, featuring multi-camera, LiDAR, and radar sensor coverage. The company is also launching AlpaSim, an open-source simulation framework available on GitHub that recreates real-world driving conditions for safe system testing at scale.
Major industry players including Lucid Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Uber, and Berkeley DeepDrive have expressed interest in adopting Alpamayo for developing Level 4 autonomy capabilities. The platform marks a significant evolution from perception-only systems to reasoning-based autonomy that can explain and justify its actions, addressing critical safety and regulatory requirements in autonomous driving technology.
