Microsoft has introduced Copilot 3D, an innovative tool in its Copilot Labs suite designed to revolutionise how everyday users generate 3D models from simple 2D images. Unveiled shortly after the launch of Copilot’s GPT-5-powered Smart Mode, this feature reflects the company’s commitment to democratising advanced creative tools and making them more intuitive for non-experts.
Accessible via a free trial for a limited number of users, Copilot 3D requires login through a Microsoft or Google account, seamlessly integrating into the wider Copilot interface. Users can activate the tool from any modern desktop browser by visiting Copilot.com, navigating to the “Labs” section, and selecting “Try now” under the Copilot 3D listing. While the feature can be accessed from mobile browsers, Microsoft advises that optimal performance is achieved on desktop systems.

The tool allows users to transform any clean JPG or PNG image—under 10 MB—into a downloadable 3D model in GLB format, which is compatible with a variety of design software, game engines, and augmented or virtual reality platforms. Generated models are stored for 28 days in a “My Creations” repository, giving users time to review and export their work.

For the best results, Microsoft recommends using images with clear backgrounds or well-defined subject separation. Early testing has shown that Copilot 3D excels at recreating inanimate objects such as furniture, umbrellas, bananas, and VR headsets, producing accurate and usable 3D reconstructions. However, the tool can struggle with complex or ambiguous subjects like humans, animals, or objects featuring visible screens, occasionally generating incomplete or distorted outputs.

The feature incorporates built-in safety measures to ensure responsible use. Microsoft advises users to upload only images they own or have permission to use and strongly discourages creating models that depict individuals without consent or contain copyrighted material. Attempts to generate 3D models of public figures are automatically blocked, maintaining both privacy and intellectual property safeguards.
Although currently in an experimental phase, Copilot 3D represents a significant step toward making 3D model creation more accessible. By removing the need for advanced technical skills, the tool opens creative possibilities for educators, hobbyists, designers, and game developers. As its capabilities expand, Copilot 3D has the potential to reshape the way digital creators conceptualize, visualize, and share three-dimensional content across industries.
