Meta has announced the launch of its generative AI assistant, Meta AI, in the European Union (EU), marking its long-awaited debut in the region. The rollout, set to begin this week, comes over a year after its initial release in the United States due to regulatory complexities.

“It’s taken longer than expected to bring our AI technology to Europe as we navigate its intricate regulatory framework, but we’re excited to finally be here,” Meta stated.

The AI assistant will now be available across 41 European countries, integrating with Meta’s suite of apps, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Unlike in the U.S., where image generation is part of its capabilities, the EU version will only provide text-based responses to user queries. Additionally, it will have access to web searches for more comprehensive answers.

Meta AI aims to assist users by offering deeper insights into topics of interest, providing solutions to everyday problems, and aiding in tasks like travel planning.

The delay in launching within the EU was largely attributed to the complex intersection of regulations surrounding data protection, artificial intelligence, and digital markets. However, with the regulatory concerns addressed, Meta is now pushing forward with AI as a key strategic priority.

The tech giant is set to invest $60-65 billion this year, focusing heavily on data centres, servers, and network infrastructure to power its AI advancements. Currently, Meta AI boasts around 700 million monthly active users, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that reaching one billion users is crucial for ensuring long-term dominance in the AI space.
