IBM’s Newly Released “Sustainability Technology Guide for Executives” to Drive Sustainable Business in Asia Pacific By Elets News Network - 26 August 2024

IBM and Ecosystm have published a new whitepaper titled “Sustainability Technology Guide for Executives. ” It is designed to help business leaders in the Asia Pacific region use technology to accelerate sustainable transformation.

Ecosystm’s research shows that many Asian Pacific organisations are still in the early stages of integrating sustainability into their core operations, with only 21% adopting a strategic approach. One main challenge is managing data, as organisations need a real-time, AI-powered view of their environmental impact to prioritise effective sustainability strategies.

According to the whitepaper, 48% of organisations struggle to integrate data from automation and AI systems into their enterprise data. Additionally, 45% find it challenging to collect data from various internal systems, and 42% need help identifying the correct data for reporting. According to a study by the IBM Institute for Business Value, only 4 in 10 organisations can automatically source sustainability data from their core systems like ERP, CRM, and energy management.

Hans Dekkers, General Manager of IBM Asia Pacific, said sustainability does offer a competitive edge, but achieving it requires high-quality data and strong governance. He added that generative AI and hybrid cloud solutions are crucial for scaling sustainability efforts across organisations.

Key points from the whitepaper include:

  • Ethical and Financial Drivers: Ethical considerations, financial benefits, and proactive strategies are the primary motivators, not regulations.

  • Need for Structured Approaches: A structured framework is essential for setting data-driven goals and embedding sustainability into workflows.

  • Tech Modernisation: Although 53% of organisations are upgrading to more efficient infrastructure to reduce their carbon footprint, a broader strategy is necessary to ensure that tech advancements support sustainability.

  • AI Concerns: AI adoption offers benefits but also raises environmental concerns. To reduce environmental impact, organisations need to adopt lightweight infrastructure models, use GPUs for AI workloads, and automate AI code generation.

  • Bridging the IT-Business Gap: 70% of CEOs drive the sustainability agenda, but only 22% of organisations have a Chief Sustainability Officer. The entire leadership team, including the CIO, CFO, and COO, must take ownership of sustainability.
