IBM has launched Granite 3.0, the latest generation of its large language models (LLMs). With a $2 billion generative AI business already in place, IBM is pushing forward with open-source models that are fine-tuned for enterprise use, with its InstructLab capabilities.
What’s New in Granite 3.0?
The latest lineup includes general-purpose models with 2 billion and 8 billion parameters, alongside specialised Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models like Granite 3.0 3B A800M Instruct and Granite 3.0 1B A400M Instruct. IBM has also introduced Granite Guardian models, focusing on safety and guardrails, ensuring secure and reliable AI applications. These models will be available on IBM’s watsonX service, as well as platforms like Amazon Bedrock, Sagemaker, and Hugging Face.

Why Granite 3.0 Stands Out
IBM’s new AI models are built for a wide range of enterprise use cases, from customer service and IT automation to application development and cybersecurity. What sets Granite 3.0 apart is the scale and precision of its training, which involves processing 12 trillion tokens of language and code data. IBM also leverages its unique data sets, giving it a competitive edge in developing and refining these models.

High Performance and Safety
IBM boasts that Granite 3.0 outperforms models from the likes of Google and Anthropic in various tasks. Beyond raw performance, IBM has prioritised safety with the introduction of its Granite Guardian models, ensuring robust protection against misuse or harmful outputs.
The new models also strike a balance between performance and cost-effectiveness, making them ideal for scaling AI use in enterprise settings.
