Google’s Gemini has launched its seventh extension, Data Commons, designed to organise public data to make it more accessible and useful. Data Commons standardises and processes data from over 200 reliable sources.
This extension covers a wide range of topics such as demographics, economics, health, and climate change. The initiative includes data from 194 countries, with some data available at the state or county level.

Since 2017, the Data Commons team has standardised and processed thousands of datasets from reliable public sources, such as the United Nations, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Google has stated, “Data Commons does not collect or own any data,” and only provides access to the data.
Since September 2023, Google has integrated large language models (LLMs) to facilitate natural language queries. Unlike traditional LLM outputs, Data Commons provides direct links to the original data sources, ensuring factual accuracy. For instance, users can ask, “Show me a breakdown of business types in Florida,” and receive direct visualisations of the data.
This new extension is part of the Gemini Education rollout and is enabled by default. It joins other Gemini extensions like Google Flights, Google Hotels, Google Maps, Google Workspace, YouTube, and YouTube Music. According to Google, “Workspace data will not be used to train Gemini’s public model,” ensuring user privacy.
The Data Commons extension is now available in Beta for Gemini for Google Workspace add-on subscribers, including Gmail and Drive users.
