Google has officially introduced Search Live with voice input in the Google app for Android and iOS devices, exclusively for users in the United States enrolled in the AI Mode experiment via Google Labs. This innovative feature allows users to engage in dynamic, back-and-forth voice conversations with Google Search, offering both verbal responses and web-based content to explore further.
Designed to enhance usability while multitasking or on the go, Search Live enables users to tap a new “Live” icon within the app and simply speak their queries. For instance, asking “What are some tips for preventing a linen dress from wrinkling in a suitcase?” will trigger a real-time, AI-generated audio response. Users can easily follow up with additional questions like “What should I do if it still wrinkles?” while also accessing relevant web links displayed directly on their screens for deeper information.
The new functionality operates seamlessly in the background, enabling users to continue their voice interaction even when switching between other applications. A “Transcript” button is also available, allowing users to switch to a text-based interaction mode at any point. Past conversations can be revisited through the AI Mode history, making the experience both versatile and user-friendly.
At the core of Search Live is a customised version of Google’s Gemini model, specifically engineered for advanced voice processing. This AI system builds upon Google Search’s trusted information infrastructure to ensure responses are accurate, timely, and useful, regardless of the format or location of the query.
Another key element powering this experience is the query fan-out technique, which broadens the scope of search results by pulling in a wider range of web-based content. This enriches the user’s exploration with diverse and helpful sources of information, transforming voice search from a simple utility into an interactive, discovery-driven experience.
Visually, users will notice a new sparkle-adorned waveform icon under the search bar when AI Mode is enabled. Alternatively, a separate button near the search field opens the full-screen Search Live interface, which comes in both light and dark modes. A signature gradient ‘G’ logo and a wave arc in AI Mode colours provide a distinct visual identity for the feature. At the bottom of the screen, users can toggle mute or unmute and access the transcript option.
In the coming months, Google plans to expand Search Live’s capabilities further, including the integration of camera input. This would allow users to show Google what they are seeing in real-time, paving the way for more intuitive and context-aware searches.
With Search Live, Google is continuing its push toward more interactive and intelligent search experiences. As this feature rolls out to more users and devices, it represents a significant step forward in merging voice, AI, and real-time engagement in search technology.
