Google has rolled out a new Android application called Edge Gallery, designed to bring the power of generative AI directly to smartphones—no internet connection required. Available for download through the official Google AI Edge GitHub repository, the app enables users to run advanced AI models locally on their devices. An iOS version is also in the pipeline, as confirmed by the company.
In a blog post, Google highlighted the app as a valuable tool for exploring the LLM Inference API and showcasing the potential of on-device AI. By eliminating the need for continuous online access, Edge Gallery aims to make artificial intelligence more accessible and privacy-conscious.
Users of the app can choose from a variety of AI models, including Google’s Gemma 3 and the compact Gemma 3n, as well as Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 models. These models support three main functionalities:
- Conversational AI for interactive chats
- Image Understanding via image uploads
- Prompt Lab, a single-turn interaction tool for quick AI responses
The models are available in different sizes, tailored to the user’s device capabilities and desired performance level. A lightweight model is around 500MB, while more powerful versions can be as large as 4GB. To access and download these models, users must sign in to Hugging Face and agree to its usage terms, as the platform hosts these open-source models.
Once installed, the models can operate entirely offline, offering a seamless user experience without tapping into cloud resources. Notably, the Gemma 3n is optimised for on-device use, consuming minimal memory and system resources.

On the LMArena leaderboard, a benchmark for text-based AI tasks, Gemma 3n scored 1293 points, placing it close to OpenAI’s o3-mini (1329) and o4-mini (1379). Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro currently leads with a score of 1446.
Since the AI models operate offline, they rely solely on pre-trained data. For instance, Gemma 3n includes knowledge only up to June 2024.
With Edge Gallery, Google is setting a new standard for AI accessibility—empowering users to explore, interact, and innovate with generative AI entirely from their mobile devices.
