Google DeepMind introduces SignGemma By Kaanchi Chawla - 02 June 2025

SignGemma

Google DeepMind has introduced SignGemma, its most advanced AI model to date for translating sign language into spoken and written text. Set to join the Gemma model family later this year, SignGemma represents a major stride toward building more inclusive and accessible artificial intelligence systems.

Tailored primarily for American Sign Language (ASL) and English, SignGemma is trained to handle a wide range of sign languages with multilingual capabilities. The model aims to bridge communication gaps by converting sign language gestures into real-time spoken or written responses, making technology more accessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.

This announcement follows the launch of Gemma 3n, a powerful multimodal model that interprets input from audio, video, images, and text. Gemma 3n allows developers to create interactive, real-time applications such as voice-controlled systems, smart assistants, and advanced speech recognition tools.

In another innovative use of AI, DeepMind collaborated with Georgia Tech and the Wild Dolphin Project to release DolphinGemma, a model trained on decades of underwater audio and video data to analyse and generate dolphin vocalisations—paving the way for advancements in animal communication research.

The Gemma 3 family also includes MedGemma, a model suite focused on medical AI. It supports clinical decision-making and image analysis, aiming to revolutionise healthcare by improving diagnostics and treatment planning through artificial intelligence.

Complementing these efforts, NVIDIA, the American Society for Deaf Children, and creative agency Hello Monday launched Signs, an interactive web platform to promote ASL learning and the development of accessible AI applications.

These breakthroughs collectively mark a transformative shift in the AI landscape, enabling enhanced accessibility, communication, and participation for diverse communities in education, work, and everyday life.
