Google announces layoffs in move towards AI and Automation By Elets News Network - 17 January 2024

Google

In a major development, Google has confirmed the dismissal of over 1,000 employees from various departments including digital assistant, hardware, and engineering globally. Additionally, The Verge has reported that Google’s ad sales team will undergo reductions, with several hundred roles being cut. According to a memo from Philipp Schindler, Google’s senior vice president, these changes will primarily impact the Large Customer Sales (LCS) division, which deals with large business clients. Meanwhile, the Google Customer Solutions (GCS) group, responsible for smaller business ad sales, is set to become the new focal point of Google’s ad sales efforts.

This downsizing suggests a continued trend of job reductions for 2024, as companies increasingly turn to AI and automation technologies. A report by The Information indicates that Google might cut up to 30,000 jobs this year, leaning more on AI tools for ad creation and optimization with minimal human input.

In a similar vein, Amazon has also announced layoffs affecting several hundred employees within its streaming and studio sectors, particularly impacting Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios in the Americas. Business Insider reports that Amazon is pressuring managers to lower performance ratings for those not adhering to the Return to Office policy, leading to speculations of a subtle “quiet firing” strategy.
