Day 6 of ‘12 Days of OpenAI’: Santa Mode Joins ChatGPT With Real-Time Video and Voice Features By Elets News Network - 13 December 2024

Open AI

The sixth day of ’12 Days of OpenAI’ saw the addition of video and screen-sharing in ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode. This feature allows users to interact visually and audibly with ChatGPT, making conversations more functional and engaging. The rollout starts today for all users, including Plus and Pro subscribers, with full availability expected next year for enterprise and education plans.

This announcement followed a brief service outage the day before, where OpenAI assured users of a detailed follow-up. Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s product lead, emphasised their commitment by saying, “We know you depend on us, and we take this very seriously.”

More Interactive ChatGPT Features

The new video and screen-sharing features enable users to collaborate with ChatGPT in real-time. Tasks like troubleshooting, learning new skills, or reviewing work become more intuitive with visual aid. During a demo, ChatGPT guided a user through making pour-over coffee with step-by-step instructions over video.

Rowan Zellers from OpenAI highlighted that users can now hold conversations with ChatGPT using both video and voice. Screen-sharing enhances this by offering direct assistance for tasks like coding, crafting responses, or presentations.

This feature mirrors similar tools like Microsoft Copilot Vision, Anthropic’s capabilities, and Google’s Mariner, adding to the competition.

Santa Joins the Festivities

OpenAI also added a Santa Mode to ChatGPT, letting users interact with Santa in real-time. By clicking a snowflake icon, users can ask Santa about traditions, favourite reindeer, or even beard care tips. The feature resets voice usage limits for the month.

During a demo, Santa shared, “My favourite tradition is when children hang their stockings by the fireplace—it’s a moment filled with magic and anticipation.” This playful addition aims to spread holiday cheer.

Driving Subscriptions with Santa Mode

Noam Brown, an OpenAI researcher, noted, “I fully expect Santa Mode to drive more subscriptions than o1, and I’m at peace with this.” This aligns with OpenAI’s strategy, as o1 currently costs $200.

AI Race Intensifies

OpenAI’s update comes amidst growing competition. Google recently launched Gemini 2, and Amazon introduced Nova. OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman teased future updates, saying, “AGI is in the air,” sparking discussions about GPT-4.5 or GPT-5.
