Day 4 of ‘12 Days of OpenAI’ Sees the Launch of Canvas for Real-Time User Collaboration By Elets News Network - 11 December 2024

OpenAI

OpenAI has introduced Canvas, a feature for collaborative writing and coding with ChatGPT. Announced during the “12 Days of OpenAI” updates, Canvas provides a side-by-side interface where users can work with ChatGPT in real-time. It allows users to edit, get feedback, and refine content or code.

Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, explained in a YouTube video that the feature is designed to enhance collaboration between users and AI. Canvas is available to all ChatGPT users on the GPT-4 model, but access is limited for free users. It can be used on the web or through the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows.

Canvas lets users and ChatGPT work together on a document, offering suggestions as needed. The feature can be accessed quickly using a shortcut and can also integrate with custom GPTs.

For essays, users can paste large sections of text into the input field, and ChatGPT will display a Canvas button. This feature enables ChatGPT to comment on specific parts of the text, providing feedback similar to that of a professor. The same approach applies to programming code. As a demonstration, OpenAI engineers created a children’s Christmas story through Canvas, which also has the ability to incorporate emojis to make it more interactive.

The Canvas announcement is part of the “12 Days of OpenAI” series, which has so far seen the introduction of ChatGPT Pro, a $200 per month subscription plan, a fine-tuning research programme, and Sora Turbo, a video generative AI model, that is available to Plus and Pro users.
