John J. Giamatteo has been appointed by BlackBerry to the position of Chief Executive Officer and Director, with immediate effect. Having taken on the role of interim CEO since November 4, 2023, Richard (Dick) Lynch will remain on the Board Chair. The corporation has declared that it will operate the cybersecurity and Internet of Things businesses as completely independent divisions. BlackBerry has decided against pursuing an IPO for its low-cost Internet company.
“Giamatteo’s deep industry experience and outstanding track record of inspiring teams and delivering operational excellence means he is strongly positioned to drive this critical transformation of BlackBerry,” said Mike Daniels, Chair of the Compensation, Nomination and Governance Committee of the BlackBerry Board.

Since October 2021, Giamatteo, who has over thirty years of experience working for international technology businesses, has been President of BlackBerry’s Cybersecurity business unit. He has been instrumental in bringing about major improvements to the go-to-market strategy, product portfolio, and organizational effectiveness throughout that time. Before joining BlackBerry, he served as McAfee’s president and chief revenue officer.

John was the Chief Operating Officer of AVG Technologies, a well-known supplier of mobile and internet security, before that. In addition, he has executive roles with Nortel Networks, RealNetworks, and Solera.
“I am excited to lead the next phase of BlackBerry’s evolution as its CEO. BlackBerry’s IoT and Cybersecurity businesses have market-leading technology, exceptional teams and large market opportunities,” said Giamatteo.
BlackBerry announced that it will no longer pursue an IoT subsidiary’s initial public offering. As part of the process, BlackBerry’s centralized corporate functions will be divided and streamlined into teams that are dedicated to business units, with the goal of each division running profitably and autonomously going ahead.
