Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to invest $8.3 billion in the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region in Maharashtra to expand cloud infrastructure in India. This investment is expected to add $15.3 billion to India’s GDP and support over 81,300 full-time jobs annually in the local data centre supply chain by 2030.
This is part of AWS’s earlier announced $12.7 billion investment in India’s cloud infrastructure by 2030 to meet the demand for cloud services across the country.

The Maharashtra Government and AWS signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the World Economic Forum in Davos to confirm the investment. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, said the plan would support the state’s goal of becoming a data centre hub and create jobs and growth opportunities.

AWS has already invested $3.7 billion in Maharashtra between 2016 and 2022. The additional investment will support 81,300 full-time equivalent jobs in local industries who are connected to data centres, such as telecommunications, construction, electricity generation, maintenance, and operations.

David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President of Global Public Policy and General Counsel at Amazon, said AWS is investing to support the growing demand for cloud and AI services in India. He said AWS would work with the Maharashtra Government to expand access to technology for businesses, public sector organisations, startups, and small and medium enterprises.
AWS opened its first cloud region in India in 2016 and a second in Hyderabad in 2022. These regions help customers store data in India and run workloads with low latency and high availability.
