Apple is reportedly in early-stage talks with Perplexity AI as it looks to deepen its artificial intelligence strategy, particularly around search and voice-driven experiences. The move is seen as part of Apple’s broader ambition to reduce its reliance on Google and revamp Siri with more advanced, real-time AI capabilities.
As per sources, Adrian Perica, who leads Apple’s mergers and acquisitions division, has been spearheading discussions with Perplexity’s leadership, alongside top Apple executives including Services head Eddy Cue. While no official offer has been made, multiple exploratory meetings have taken place in recent months.
Founded by Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity AI is a rising player in the AI space, known for blending conversational intelligence with up-to-the-minute web search — a model that could help Apple develop its own AI-driven search engine. The tech giant is said to be weighing two potential routes: acquiring Perplexity entirely or partnering to integrate its technology into Apple’s ecosystem, possibly through Safari or Siri.
This potential collaboration aligns with Apple’s ongoing push to bring in AI expertise and stay competitive against firms like Google, Microsoft, and Meta. The company is actively recruiting top AI talent, including in a bidding race against Meta to attract innovators like Daniel Gross, the founder of Safe Superintelligence Inc.

Meanwhile, Apple continues to face internal challenges with rolling out the next generation of Siri, prompting a more aggressive exploration of external solutions. Notably, Eddy Cue recently revealed during Google’s antitrust trial that Apple had considered working with Perplexity for search integration within Safari — a move that sheds light on Apple’s desire for strategic alternatives to its $18 billion deal with Google, which keeps Google Search as the default on iOS devices.
Although Apple’s 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference didn’t spotlight major AI announcements, this behind-the-scenes activity suggests the company is moving quickly to close its AI gap and possibly build an in-house search engine powered by cutting-edge conversational AI.
