Andrej Karpathy, a renowned figure in the field of artificial intelligence and one of the original members of OpenAI, announced his departure from the Microsoft-supported entity, OpenAI, on a social media platform X. This move represents a notable exit from OpenAI, a leading competitor in the race to advance artificial intelligence technology.

Karpathy revealed his intentions to focus on his personal projects in the immediate future. Having rejoined OpenAI last year for a second term, his previous tenure included a significant role as a senior AI director at Tesla (TSLA.O), where he was instrumental in the development of AI and driver assistance technologies for the electric vehicle manufacturer.

Karpathy, who was mentored by the esteemed AI scientist Fei-Fei Li at Stanford, was among the initial team at OpenAI before his spell at Tesla. He has recently discussed the concept of large language models serving as a novel form of computer operating systems.
