Amazon has introduced Nova foundation models (FMs), a new generation of AI tools designed to enhance its generative AI offerings. Named “Amazon Nova,” these models can process text, images, and videos as input, making them useful for analysing videos, understanding documents, and creating multimedia content like videos and graphics.

Rohit Prasad, Amazon’s SVP of Artificial General Intelligence, informed that about 1,000 generative AI applications are running internally, providing insights into the challenges faced by developers. “Our new Amazon Nova models are intended to help with these challenges for internal and external builders, and provide compelling intelligence and content generation while also delivering meaningful progress on latency, cost-effectiveness, customisation, information grounding, and agentic capabilities,” he added.

The Nova series includes Nova Micro, Lite, and Pro. These models are designed to be efficient, affordable, and easy to integrate into customer systems. Amazon states they are at least 75% less expensive and faster than other models in their category available on Amazon Bedrock, its fully managed AI service. Nova Premier, another model in the series, will launch in early 2025.

Nova models work seamlessly with Amazon Bedrock, which allows customers to access foundation models from Amazon and other top AI companies through a single API. Businesses can experiment with different models to find the best fit for their needs.

In 2025, Amazon plans to launch two additional models: a speech-to-speech model and a multimodal “any-to-any” model. The speech-to-speech model will interpret spoken language and tone for natural, human-like conversations. The “any-to-any” model will handle text, images, audio, and video as both input and output, enabling tasks like cross-format translations and advanced content editing. With Nova, Amazon is readying itself to compete with companies like Adobe, Meta, and OpenAI.
