Airtel is gearing up to launch its satellite internet service in India before Elon Musk’s Starlink makes its debut. According to reports, Rajan Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has mentioned that the service is ready and is awaiting central government approval.
The groundwork is complete, with base stations set up in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Airtel is prepared to start operations as soon as permissions come through. The company has already launched 635 satellites and offers satellite services in various global markets. Rajan added that the pricing strategy aims to serve remote areas affordably, setting the stage for strong competition with Starlink. Starlink, still awaiting government clearance, has higher pricing, which might give Airtel an advantage in the Indian market.

In related news, Jio, BSNL, and Airtel users can now make calls using any network if their own lacks a signal. On 17 January, the government introduced the Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) facility, linked to the rollout of 4G mobile sites funded by the Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN).
This facility allows mobile users to connect to 4G services from any provider using a single tower supported by DBN. Sharing government-funded towers simplifies infrastructure needs, speeds up implementation, and improves overall network coverage while reducing the number of new towers required.
