Hyderabad-based physical AI startup Tensrai has raised ₹3.4 crore in a pre-seed round to build software that lets the robots, vehicles and machines factories already own carry out physical tasks on their own. The round was backed by India Accelerator, Finvolve, Hyderabad Angels and other angel investors.
The company said it will use the capital to speed up technology development, strengthen its engineering and deployment capabilities, and expand into domestic and international markets.
Autonomy as a retrofit, not a replacement
Tensrai’s pitch rests on a simple idea: most industrial sites cannot afford to rip out working equipment and buy a new fleet of robots. Instead, the startup is building what it calls a unified, retrofittable autonomy platform, a common software and hardware stack that can make different kinds of machines autonomous, whether they are purpose-built robots or vehicles and equipment a factory or warehouse already runs.
The platform brings together several layers of the physical AI stack:
- Vision-first navigation and AI-based localisation, so machines can find their way without heavy dependence on fixed infrastructure.
- Reasoning powered by vision-language models (VLMs), which help a machine interpret its surroundings and work through a task.
- Autonomous mobility and robotic arm manipulation for moving and handling objects.
- A teach-and-deploy feature built on vision-language-action (VLA) models, intended to let operators show a machine a new skill rather than programme it line by line.
By adding autonomy to existing assets, Tensrai aims to cut the cost and complexity that usually hold back robotics adoption. According to Tracxn data cited in reports, the company builds systems for factory and yard environments that fit onto existing industrial vehicles and can handle tough outdoor terrain.
Where it wants to work
The startup is targeting autonomous material handling and cleaning across factories, warehouses, airports, hospitals, shopping malls and commercial campuses. It is also developing a general-purpose mobile manipulator, a robot that combines autonomous movement with robotic arms, for work spanning material handling, cleaning, manufacturing and construction.
Tensrai plans to earn through four routes: selling robots, retrofitting autonomy onto customers’ machines, Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) and customised solutions.
The team
Tensrai was founded by Sai Nikhil Rao Gona, who serves as CEO, along with Venkata Sai Charan Chalamalasetty, Harshith Uppalapati and Vivek Datta. The company is registered as Tensrai Technologies Private Limited and was incorporated in Hyderabad in March 2022, according to corporate records.
Why it matters
Much of India’s AI conversation has centred on language models and data centres. Tensrai’s round is a reminder that the next wave is physical AI: models that see, reason and act in the real world. Vision-language-action models are giving robots a more general way to learn tasks, and a retrofit-first approach could make that technology practical for Indian manufacturers, logistics operators and facility managers who need automation without the capital outlay of new equipment.
The cheque is small, but the direction is clear. If retrofittable autonomy works at scale, the machines already on India’s shop floors could become the country’s first generation of AI-driven robots.
