With the recent advancements in AI technologies and AI’s prevalent use in many industries of the current day, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, emphasized the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the job market over the next five to ten years. In a recent episode of the “Hard Fork” podcast, he urged teenagers to proactively engage with AI technologies to prepare for the impending changes.

Hassabis highlighted that, as with previous technological shifts, AI is expected to disrupt certain jobs while simultaneously creating new, more valuable roles. He stated, “Over the next 5 to 10 years, I think we’re going to find what normally happens with big new technology shifts, which is that some jobs get disrupted. But new, more valuable, usually more interesting jobs get created.”

Drawing parallels between generative AI and past innovations like the internet and smartphones, Hassabis identified AI as the defining technology for Generation Alpha. “Just as the internet shaped millennials and smartphones defined Gen Z, generative AI is the hallmark of Gen Alpha,” he said. He advised young individuals to immerse themselves in AI tools, aiming to become proficient or “ninjas” in their use. This approach involves not only understanding how AI functions but also exploring its applications and potential.

The rapid advancement of AI technologies has prompted educational institutions to adapt. Hassabis emphasized the importance of foundational skills such as coding, creativity, adaptability, and resilience. He also encouraged students to focus on “learning to learn,” fostering a mindset that embraces continuous education and adaptability.

Meanwhile, companies and governments around the world are grappling with how to manage this shift, balancing innovation with economic and social stability. Countries like Singapore and Finland are already rolling out national AI literacy campaigns to prepare their populations.

The conversation around AI’s impact on employment is not isolated. Other industry leaders, like Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, have also encouraged teenagers to explore AI technologies, highlighting the importance of understanding and engaging with these tools early on. As AI continues to evolve, its influence is expected to permeate various sectors, necessitating a workforce that is both knowledgeable and adaptable

As AI technologies advance, their influence on the job market becomes increasingly significant. Demis Hassabis’s message to teenagers and young adults is both a warning and an opportunity. As AI redefines work, creativity, and problem-solving, those who embrace it early and thoughtfully will be best positioned to lead in the coming decades. For students, this means engaging now, through classes, self-learning, online tools, or AI clubs, and staying curious. For parents, educators, and policymakers, it means rethinking how we teach and what we prioritize in the curriculum.
