Spirituality Takes Centrestage as AI and Tech Ensure Security at Maha Kumbh 2025 By Elets News Network - 14 January 2025

Maha Kumbh 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 has finally kicked off, and this year approximately 400 million people are expected to attend the 44-day-long spiritual and religious event. To make the attendees feel safe and secure, and to maintain an efficient management system, the Uttar Pradesh Government has taken advanced security measures with AI, drones, intelligence systems and emergency response plans.

AI and Drone Surveillance

To monitor the vast area of Maha Kumbh, AI-powered cameras and drones are deployed. These devices provide a view of the event, helping to track movements, detect anomalies, and prevent risks. Anti-drone systems and tethered drones further enhance aerial security by neutralising unauthorised drones and maintaining continuous surveillance.

Underwater drones have been introduced for the first time, providing monitoring beneath the rivers, particularly during the sacred Sangam Snan. These drones are equipped to operate in low-light conditions and can dive up to 100 metres. They relay real-time information to the Integrated Command and Control Centre, enabling responses to suspicious activities or emergencies. These underwater drones function over unlimited distances, ensuring coverage of the rivers.

Kumbh Sah’AI’yak Chatbot

The Kumbh Sah’AI’yak chatbot is an AI-powered virtual assistant designed to help devotees. It provides real-time information about schedules, rituals, and key locations, along with directions to venues, accommodations, and facilities. The chatbot shares updates on crowd density, weather, and safety alerts, helping users plan better. It supports multiple languages, offers voice-based interaction, and connects users to emergency services like police and medical teams. Additionally, it guides devotees on spiritual practices, including the significance of rituals and sacred bath timings. By integrating services such as Lost and Found assistance and booking facilities, the chatbot ensures convenience, safety, and efficient crowd management. Its name, “Sah’AI’yak,” combines “AI” and the Hindi word “Sahayak,” meaning helper, highlighting its role as a digital companion during the event.

Cybersecurity Measures

To align with the digital framework of Maha Kumbh 2025, a cybersecurity team has been established. This team is responsible for protecting the digital infrastructure and ensuring the security of devotees’ data. With millions of people accessing digital services during the event, the team’s role includes monitoring for cyber threats and addressing vulnerabilities.

Advanced Equipment in Emergency Response

The multi-disaster response vehicle introduced for the event is equipped with tools to address emergencies. These include victim location cameras, lifting tools, and cutting equipment. The vehicle also features an inbuilt generator for operation of electronic systems. Additionally, it carries lifting bags and machines to move heavy debris, aiding rescue operations. This equipment ensures readiness for incidents, from natural disasters to structural collapses.

Remote-controlled life buoys have been deployed to enhance safety during water-based emergencies. These devices can navigate to specific locations and assist in transporting individuals to safety. This initiative ensures quick response times and effective rescue efforts.

Water Police Deployment

The Uttar Pradesh government has added river security by deploying a large contingent of Water Police. Surveillance tools, including underwater drones and sonar systems, are being used for monitoring. To support patrolling, 11 FRP speed motorboats and four Anaconda motorboats, equipped with facilities, are operational in the Sangam area. Additionally, three Water Police stations and two floating rescue stations have been established, operating around the clock.

These measures are complemented by the deployment of life-saving equipment such as diving kits, life buoys, and life jackets. Deep-water barricading along an 8-kilometre stretch adds safety, ensuring controlled access and minimising risks.

Lost and Found Centres

The integration of technology into Lost and Found centres is another key feature of Maha Kumbh 2025. Digital registration systems are in place to help reunite lost individuals with their families. These centres display information about missing persons and their locations. For individuals without mobile phones, facilities to contact family members are available. Additionally, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are used to increase the reach of these services.

Security Framework and Coordination

Mock drills and infrastructure inspections have been conducted to ensure readiness. Interceptor drones, tethered drones, and anti-drone systems are part of the security measures, maintaining vigilance from land, water, and air. The deployment of 40% additional security personnel compared to the previous event highlights the scale of preparations.

Coordination with railway and traffic management systems aims to streamline the movement of pilgrims, ensuring a smooth experience. Temporary police stations and checkpoints have been set up to manage the large influx of devotees.

As we reflect on the scale of Maha Kumbh 2025, it becomes evident that managing an event of this magnitude requires a blend of strategy and technology. The deployment of AI-powered systems, drones, and digital platforms ensures the safety and well-being of millions of devotees.

The integration of these tools redefines how mega-events are managed. AI systems enable real-time surveillance and anomaly detection, ensuring immediate responses to potential threats. Drones, whether in the air or underwater, extend the reach of surveillance, covering areas that are otherwise challenging to monitor.

However, technology alone is not a universal solution. It needs to be backed by trained personnel and well-defined protocols. Conducting mock drills and establishing a layered security framework shows an understanding of this balance by the Uttar Pradesh Government. The focus on cybersecurity is another admirable step, recognising the importance of protecting digital data in a world increasingly reliant on online platforms. Integrating modern solutions with traditional planning in the event shows how technology can support the management of large-scale gatherings while maintaining security and organisation.
